Basic Pet Care Tips
Statistics show that people who own pets tend to live longer and happier lives.  So you have decided to join them?  Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing your new pet.

The first thing to consider is where you live.  Some places might not allow pets, however they do not consider fish or birds as pets, at least most apartments this is the case.  Should you live some place that does allow pets, you need to decide what kind of room you have for them.  Cats who are mostly indoors tend to need a lot of room to search and many places to sleep.  If you decide to go with a dog, the size of the dog will be determined by what breed of dog you select.  Bigger dogs tend to need more room, and probably are best if you can have them outside at times. Then consider your climate.  A dog that has a heavier coat would not be too happy in a warm environment, just as a dog with a light coat would not do well in a colder climate.

Next is selecting your pet.  Today most people want to go with certain breeds of cats and dogs.  Keep in mind though that purebred pets tend to cost more in the long run -- care, initial cost, health, etc.  If you are mainly looking for a companion, a good choice is always a mixed breed, also known as a mutt (at least in the case of dogs).  These pets tend to be less finicky about their food and be in better health.   If you choose to go with a purebred animal, the best places to check are pet stores, kennels, and veterinarian offices for more information.  If you choose to go with a mixed breed, a local animal shelter or humane society is a good place to check.  When selecting the pet of your choice, also keep in mind if you want an adult or a baby.  A baby will be a little more work, but easier to train and with you longer, but an adult that has been well trained is loyal and less work.

Once you have your pet home, you will need to establish a place for them to sleep.  Do you allow them on furniture or do you have them sleep in a special bed or blanket on the floor?  If you have them outside, is there a doghouse or some other sheltered spot for him to sleep.

Don't forget that you also need to supply your pet with fresh water and food, which is the next thing to consider.  Do you feed him dry or canned, or a combination?  The answer to that might need your veterinarian's help.  You need to consider your dog's nutritional needs.  Dry is good for the teeth, but might not have the nutrients your dog needs.  Canned food can get a bit costly.  Also make sure that you change the water daily and that there is plenty there.  Even in winter, your dog will need plenty of water, since many sources of heating can create a dry environment.
